The Dutch School of Thermodynamics flourished at the Universities of Amsterdam and Leiden during the period 1890 and ca 1910. It consists of a combination of Gibbs thermodynamics and Van der Waals equation of state. A remarkable representative of this School was Johannes Jacobus van Laar (1860-1938). who worked at the University of Amsterdam between 1898 and 1912. In 1989 a thermodynamic point was called after him. This book describes his life and work. Van Emmerik took his doctor's degree at the Technical University of Delft. This biography is an extended version of his desertation. «
