It is the goal of environmental security to protect people from the short andlongterm ravages of nature manmade threats and deterioration of the naturalenvironment. Environmental security includes activities related to pollutionprevention environmental conservation compliance with regulations andenvironmental restoration. It is a challenge for transition countries tosupport all of these activities due to limited resources competing prioritiesand the fact that most environmental regulations assessment methods andprocedures and restoration techniques were developed in countries whereresources were not limited. This volume presents the main environmentalsecurity challenges facing transition countries as well as practical methodsand approaches for addressing them. These approaches are equally applicable toall countries.
