Many parts of the world are currently experiencing the outcome of processes ofeconomic integration globalization and transformation. Technological advancesin telecommunications and in transport facilities have opened up newpossibilities for contracts and exchanges among regions. External effects amongregions have increased in importance. As a result competition among regionshas intensified. Except some pioneering work by regional scientists andscholars of public finance and economics the phenomenon of regionalcompetition has yet to attract the attention it warrants despite itsimportance for policymaking.
