KM3 explores a world that is dense. It constructs a city with space for endless capacities, populations and possibilities. A city beyond scarcity. Beyond separation. Optimistic. Omnipresent. The 3D City. Constructed by MVRDV in collaboration with the Berlage Institute in the period 1997-2003, a follow up on FARMAX, made by the same authors. An enormous production of built matter - houses, warehouses, factories, offices - in the last decade has consumed space and sometimes has led to scarceness of space. It has resulted in higher ground prices and demands for stronger investments. Can it imply another urbanism? Can it result in a city where 2D planning is replaced by a 3D one? The research, conducted by MVRDV in the last 10 years, involves built projects as to more projective studies involving the 3D city. Based on this research different aspects examine the intensive changes and spatial potentials of a 3D city. This is illustrated through projects like Pigcity and Expo 2000 in Hannover.
