Industrial Ecology IE is an emerging multidisciplinary field. Universitydepartments and higher education programs are being formed on the subjectfollowing the lead of Yale University The Norwegian University of Science andTechnology NTNU Leiden University University of Michigan at Ann ArborCarnegie Mellon University University of California at Berkeley Institute forSuperior Technology in Lisbon Eidgenssische Technische Hochschule ETHZrich and The University of Tokyo. IE deals with stocks and flows ininterconnected networks of industry and the environment which relies on abasic framework for analysis. Among others InputOutput Analysis IOA isrecognized as a key conceptual and analytical framework for IE. A majorchallenge is that the field of IOA manifests a long history since the 1930swith two Nobel Prize Laureates in the field and requires considerableanalytical rigor.
